Biology Field Intern
The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, the nationally regarded regional planning agency for the greater Milwaukee area, and the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the five urban areas within Southeastern Wisconsin, has an immediate opening for a part-time intern position to assist with the Environmental Division’s various watershed management planning projects.
About the Opportunity
The ideal candidate will be actively pursuing a degree in biology, natural resources, or environmental science, with an interest in watershed management and planning. Work efforts will entail field work assistance that may include botanical surveys, environmental assessments, data entry, water quality surveying, and mapping.
Required Qualifications
- Experience and/or class work in environmental sciences or natural resource planning or completed degree in biology, natural resources, environmental science, or related fields
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and ability to swim
- Perform work from a boat or traverse rugged terrain
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to lift 50lbs
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of and/or identification skills for aquatic and terrestrial plants and willingness to learn
- Knowledge of statistical software, ArcMap GIS software, and Microsoft® Office products preferred
- Holds a Wisconsin Boater Safety Certification (preferred) or ability to obtain certification within two weeks of hire
- Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in botany, wildlife, natural resources, or a closely related field
This position is anticipated to last for 3 months and end near late summer or early fall 2026. The average work week will be comprised of up to 20 hours per week, Monday through Thursday. Field work will be across the extent of Southeastern Wisconsin. Fleet vehicles are available for use from office to field sites. The hourly rate range for this position is $18 to $20 per hour depending upon education and experience of applicants.
