Floodland and Stormwater Management

The SEWRPC comprehensive watershed studies include floodland management components that provide the basis for many of the floodland management activities within the Region. Hydrologic and hydraulic computer simulation models were developed under each watershed study and used to compute flood flows and stages along streams and to map the associated floodplain boundaries. Those floodplain maps and models have been incorporated in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood insurance studies from their inception in the 1970s through the current FEMA Floodplain Map Modernization program. In addition, SEWRPC studies and models have been: 1) used as the basis for development of floodland management plans by SEWRPC and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD); 2) provided to consultants throughout the Region for use in water resources projects; and 3) used by SEWRPC and consultants for municipalities and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the hydraulic designs of bridges and culverts associated with street and highway projects. The SEWRPC staff is currently updating floodplain boundaries throughout Milwaukee County and along streams tributary to Milwaukee County under a project conducted for the Milwaukee County Automated Mapping and Land Information System Steering Committee (MCAMLIS) and the MMSD.

 

SEWRPC has prepared stormwater management plans for several communities and continues to assist municipalities and other units of government in addressing both the water quality and quantity aspects of stormwater management. The SEWRPC staff served on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Standards Oversight Council committee that prepared technical standards for post-construction stormwater infiltration practices.
