Aquatic Plant Management Plan for Big Cedar and Gilbert Lakes

Big Cedar Lake is a 937-acre spring lake located within the Towns of West Bend and Polk in Washington County. As a spring-fed lake, groundwater provides most of the water in the Lake although several small unnamed tributaries provide surface-water inflow, including from 44-acre Gilbert Lake to the northwest. Previous aquatic plant surveys of Big Cedar Lake have noted many native aquatic plant species as well as the invasive species Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) and curly-leaf pondweed (Potamogeton crispus). The Big Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District (“District”) conducts lake management activities on the lakes, including aquatic plant management. The District is required to reevaluate the aquatic plant community, update the aquatic plant management plan, and renew its aquatic plant management permit every five years.

In February 2023, the District and Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission executed an agreement that the Commission would conduct aquatic plant surveys of Big Cedar and Gilbert lakes and prepare an aquatic plant management plan. Commission staff conducted the surveys in July and August 2023 and have used the survey results to develop a draft aquatic plant management plan with incorporated comments from the District and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This plan summarizes recent aquatic plant surveys of the lakes, discusses options to manage invasive species populations while protecting sensitive native species, and provides recommendations for long-term aquatic plant management, including monitoring strategies, treatment techniques, and potential grant funding.

We are inviting public comments on the aquatic plant management plan. The plan can be found at the following link.
