Regional Transportation System Plan

The regional transportation system plan is intended to provide a vision for, and guide to, transportation system development in the Region for 20 or more years into the future. It is a multimodal plan of recommended transportation actions designed to address existing and anticipated future transportation problems and needs. The plan consists of four principal elements:

All future needs for transit, street and highway, and other transportation improvements considered in the regional transportation planning process are derived from the future growth proposed in the regional land use plan.

Planning Report No. 49, A Regional Transportation System Plan for Southeastern Wisconsin: 2035, represents the 5th generation of such plans. The previous regional transportation plan was adopted in 1997 as a year 2020 plan, and was amended and extended to the year 2025. The new plan will replace the existing plan, and will serve as a guide to transportation system development to the year 2035.

The new regional transportation system plan was developed under the guidance of the Technical Coordinating and Advisory Committee on Regional Transportation System Planning. The Advisory Committee was responsible for proposing to the Commission, after careful study and evaluation, a recommended regional transportation plan. The Advisory Committee was intended to promote intergovernmental and interagency coordination, and to serve as a direct liaison between the Commission planning effort and the local and State governments that will be responsible for implementing the recommendations of the plans.
