Transportation
Public transit travel on the urban transit systems within southeastern Wisconsin is estimated to represent about three percent of the total travel in the Region on an average weekday; and about six percent of the total travel within Milwaukee County on an average weekday. Because public transit travel represents such a small percentage of total travel both within the Region and in Milwaukee County, a special survey of transit travel is conducted. On-board passenger surveys on all publicly operated transit systems within the seven-county southeastern Wisconsin Region will be conducted in the spring and fall of 2012. The information collected will be used to identify the current travel patterns of transit system users.
Questionnaires will be handed out to boarding passengers who will be asked to complete and return the questionnaire before leaving the bus or taxi. Persons who cannot complete a questionnaire during their trip on the bus or taxi will be asked to complete the form and place it in the mail, or if they wish they can complete the survey online using the website indicated on the form. The information requested on the questionnaire includes the origin and destination of the trip, the purpose of the trip, bus transfer information, the methods of paying fare, whether or not a round trip is intended, location of the residence, and socioeconomic characteristics.
On the Milwaukee County transit System 25 percent of the passengers will be surveyed; on the Kenosha and Racine systems 50 percent of the passengers will be surveyed; and on all other bus and taxi systems, 100 percent of the passengers will be surveyed. The information that is obtained is vital to the proper planning of the transit systems in the Region.
The travel survey information provided to SEWRPC will be kept completely confidential and will be used for statistical purposes only. By participating in and completing the requested travel survey, residents within the Region will be performing a valuable public service through assisting in the planning of the Region’s future transportation system. The cooperation of the public in the conduct of the survey will be greatly appreciated.
