Resident Household Travel Survey

The principal element of the new origin destination travel survey is the resident household travel survey. Travel by residents of the seven-county southeastern Wisconsin Region represents about 86 percent of the total travel in the region; the resident household travel survey information is vital to the proper planning of highway and transit systems in southeastern Wisconsin.

The information obtained by the survey will be used to estimate the current travel habits and patterns of the resident population of the seven-county southeastern Wisconsin Region, identify trends in those travel habits and patterns, and assist in the development of mathematical models to project future travel behavior in the Region. The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission is the area-wide planning agency for infrastructure for the Southeastern Wisconsin Region, and transportation system planning is a major element of its regional planning responsibilities. The travel survey information is vital to the proper planning of the highway and transit systems in southeastern Wisconsin.

The Commission will seek – by telephone, interactive website and mail -- travel information on a typical weekday from approximately 16,500 or, two percent of the total 800,000 households in the Southeastern Wisconsin Region of Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha counties. A random sample of the region’s households will be requested by telephone and mail to participate in the survey. Questionnaires will be mailed to each household selected during the spring and fall survey periods. Individual trip details will be sought from all household members who are five years of age and older. This will involve listing the location, purpose, and mode of travel for each trip made during a specified travel survey day. Other information to be obtained through the survey includes the characteristics of the household including the number and type of vehicles available for use at the household and number of persons living in the household. After the assigned travel survey day households will be contacted by telephone to collect the information. A website will also be available to households who choose to complete the survey via the Internet. Advantage Research Incorporated has been retained by the Commission to assist in the conduct of the household travel survey.

The travel survey information provided to the Commission will be kept completely confidential and will be used for statistical purposes only. By participating in and completing the requested travel survey, southeastern Wisconsin Region residents will be performing a valuable public service through assisting in the planning of the Region’s transportation system. The cooperation of the public in the conduct of the survey is greatly appreciated.
